Silicon metal is a grey and shiny semiconductor metal, also known as crystalline silicon or industrial silicon, and is mainly used as an additive for non-ferrous alloys. Silicon metal is produced from quartz and coke in an electric furnace, and the content of the silicon element is about 98% (in recent years, with a content of 99.99%, Si is also called silicon metal), and the other impurities are mainly iron, aluminium, calcium, and so on. The classification of metallic silicon is according to the content of iron, aluminium, and calcium; silicon metal can be divided into different grades such as 553, 441, 411, 3303, 2202, and 1101.

Silicon metal is silver gray or dark gray powder with metallic luster, which be of high melting point, good heat resistance, high resistivity and superior oxidation resistance, it's called "industrial glutamate", which is an essential basic raw material in hi-tech industry.

There are two types of silicon metal: through oxygen and without oxygen.

First, the difference between surface oxidation.
Silicon metal is a chemical element, usually in the form of polysilicon. Its appearance is mainly gray, silver-white, smooth surface. When the metal silicon is exposed in the air for a long time, the surface will appear different degrees of oxidation, resulting in a layer of gray and black oxide, and its thickness and density increase with the extension of exposure time. Therefore, the appearance difference between metal silicon through oxygen and oxygen is mainly due to whether the surface oxidation is obvious.

Second, the difference in color change.
The color change of metallic silicon through oxygen and through oxygen is also an important sign to distinguish them. In the case of no oxygen, the surface of metal silicon is gray and silver white, and there is no color change. In the case of oxygen, as the surface begins to produce oxidation, the color of metal silicon will gradually darken, becoming dark gray or black. This is caused by the continuous thickening of the oxide layer on the surface, and it also has a certain corrosion resistance.

Three, the difference between the use of occasions.
The difference between metal silicon through oxygen and oxygen is also reflected in their use. In general, metal silicon through oxygen is more suitable for the production of electronic components, semiconductor devices, solar cells, solar photovoltaic cells and thermocouples and other materials requiring high purity. Silicon metal without oxygen is more suitable for metal pigments, ceramics, glass and other production processes, can effectively improve the weight ratio and mechanical strength.

Application

Metallurgical silicon is used as an alloying agent in aluminum casting and resultant aluminum-silicon (Al-Si) is used to make light in wight and strong car components that are better than components cast from pure aluminum. Chemical industry uses metallurgical silicon in making fumed silica, silanes and silicone.

Polysilicon of photovoltaic grade is used in polysilicon solar cells production. Monocrystal silicon on the other hand is used as a semiconductor material in modern electronics. It is used along with other material to produce LEDs, integrated circuits and FETs.
