Silicon Carbide (SiC) in Steelmaking
Silicon carbide (SiC) is primarily used in steelmaking as a high-efficiency deoxidizer, carburizer, and molten steel purifying agent.
1.High-Efficiency Composite Deoxidation
*SiC decomposes to generate SiO2 and CO gas. These products combine with free oxygen in the molten steel to form low-melting-point slag, which floats to the surface, significantly reducing oxygen content.
*Deoxidation efficiency is ~40% higher than traditional aluminum deoxidizers,
*Reduces dust emissions by 30% and slag volume by 15%.
*Shortens steelmaking time and lowers power consumption by 5%-8%.
2.Carburization & Element Recovery
*Carburizing Effect: SiC contains approximately 26%-27% carbon, enabling partial substitution for carburizers to increase molten steel carbon content37.
*Improved Alloy Recovery Rate: Enhances the absorption of alloying elements such as manganese and chromium; e.g., manganese recovery increases from 82% to 90%.
3.Molten Steel Purification & Quality Enhancement
*Defect Reduction: Lowering oxygen content reduces defects like subsurface blowholes and porosity, while improving the solidification structure of cast billets.
*Grain Refinement: Purifies harmful impurities (e.g., sulfur) in the steel, refines grain structure, and improves the surface finish of machined components
